First Grappling Form- Sixth Movement: Circling Arm

Image
Hello, everyone! Today's post is the last part of my breakdown of Wenhsiuquan's First Grappling Form. In the form the movement is done once to the right, then to the left. The photos below is what you got in the book. At first glance the photos seem to either show a double block/ stopping fist, but if you have read the text you would have found that it actually shows grabbing hold of an opponent;s arm and twisting it. What I had in mind at the time looks something like this... Yes. I know just grabbing an opponent's arm and twisting him around does not do much, but it can turn the tide of a fight.  In a sport like boxing, grabbing an opponent's arm is not allowed at all. Sure! You are allowed to block, but both sides are allowed to keep their hands free so that both sides have a sporting chance of landing blows on one another. That is all good for sport. If you actually have to defend yourself against society's less u...

First Grappling Form- Third Grappling Movement: Outward Leg Throw

Image
I remember surfing Youtube for Karate videos one day some years ago. That was when I found this video: The application of the knife hand block in this rendition of Shotokan's Heian Nidan as a leg throw has changed my life. In my form the movement starts with Taijiquan's Lute Playing Posture being used as a ready posture or as Karate people would call it- a kamae.  When I made the demo gif I decided to use a more natural feeling back stance kamae. The kamae in the form was inspired by the character Wang Jinrei of the Tekken games. Whether you use the back stance or lute playing stance does not matter. The movement starts by redirecting the opponent's punch inward. Then you place your lead leg against the outside of the opponent's lead leg and sweep outward with the blocking arm. The main reason for this move working in this scenario is that your leg is against the outside of your opponent's leg. Regardless of what hand your opponent actually punch...

First Grappling Form- First Movement (after the opening movement)

Image
Hello, everyone! :) I was going to draw a fresh set of sketches for today's post, since I have to show the application of the first two movements of our Grappling Form and I still don't have anyone to demonstrate this stuff on. Fortunately- I have finally mastered one of the legendary techniques from the Ninja of Konohagakure- The Kage Bunshin No Jutsu! So- I decided to put it to use by summoning up a shadow clone on whom I can demonstrate the throw. Now- against empty air the movements have these two main components: The one legged stance with the outward block: And the inward sweeping movement that ends in the horse stance like this. I admit that my horse stance looks rather narrow in this photo. You can get into a lower stance if you like. This movement is done first to the left, then to the right. I am sure that I will not need to explain the block and throw to the right in next week's post. A form like this one contains some movemen...

Found a new lever!

Image
Working on my first book I focussed a lot on the basics of grappling, but have far from exhausted the subject. Most techniques I have explained used a manipulation of the wrist or leg. One other lever I did give brief attention to was the philtrum- the spot right at the bottom of the nose.   In Judo our opponent wears a gi with a belt, sleeves and lapels that can be grabbed. In actual fights outside the dojo (which you should of course not actively pursue) we do not have those handholds. We dn't have rules either. Last night- surfing Youtube- my attention was brought to the head. This is how it happened: I have recently learnt Gojushiho Sho from my Sensei. For those of you that don't study Japanese Karate this is a kata that is taught at senior level. It is officially the most advanced kata I know. I have supplied a link to a video of this awesome kata below: https://youtu.be/FxyScLnqdIg You will notice the quick open hand thrusts that make up a lar...

Hi,everyone. I have had a really nice vacation during the festive season and am getting set to start work next week. In time more pages will follow. This new year promises to be very exciting to me. I wish all of you out there a year in which you will reap good results from your continued training. The Angle

Image
I like grappling, but don't get me wrong- I am not a wrestler or MMA fighter. The big attraction that arts like Judo and Aikido held for me was that I was able to throw bigger and stronger opponents, not because of strength, but know-how.  Now I must want lay-persons that a reliance of technical cunning is very attractive to a lot of us, but it is a disease rather than a way to victory. Technique has its place. In Wenhsiuquan it has a big place! But the other elements of strength and tactics also play a major part in a fight. While I am busy with the book I managed to take a set of pictures that touch upon an aspect covered in the previous book. Since the new book is going to be on defense and not throwing I thought it a good idea to write a post about it. As the first photo shows I have stepped past Shairley's downward sword attack. The second picture shows her ready to take a fall with just a sweeping motion of my arm. In a photo from my previous boo...

The first copies for distribution are finally here. :) Although I have not yet sorted out availability overseas just yet (I still need to open a Paypal account or something like that), the first copies are ready to go out to the public. Right now I have them in A4 size for R190.00 each and in  A5 (smaller) size for R 350.00 each. The order form and information on how to order will be available in the next post.

Finally done!

Thank you for waiting. The first book in my series on Wenhsiuquan Techniques is ready! It was a lot of fun getting it together and I really appreciate my friends helping me with the photos. Soon I will give you the info on how to get hold of your copy.  Off to the printers I go!

Throwing and grappling.

Image
Having studied Japanese Martial Arts and not being a big fan of the Gay Porn that gets shown on television each time an MMA match is on I want to start this chapter by saying that I regard grappling as a means to subdue a relatively harmless opponent. Being mainly a survival- orientated style- Wen Hisu Quan does not allow its exponents to become involved is a lengthy love scene of hugging and holding. If an opponent cannot be subdued by a simple throw or joint lock and he persists in fighting you, you should go to maim and kill! The above is also in accordance with Dr Jigoro Kano's principle of "Minimum Effort Maximum Effect" which the Chinese know as "using four tahils  against a thousand katis" and which somehow got mistranslated to the Western World as "Screw Technique and Just Do A Lot Of Weight Training To Win With Brute Force". Don't ask me why, but it's just the way it is. If you are really interested in learning the different kin...
