Hi, everyone. This week I have gotten started on a new book that I could have read much earlier, but now finally got down to reading. That book, my friends, is the famed Bhagavad Gita. Sun Tzu's Art of War and Lao Tze's Taode Qing are actually very thin and make for relative easy reading. If you manage to get your hands on Musashi's Book of Five Rings you can find yourself finishing it within a month. The Baghavad Gita, on the other hand, is a montsrous volume of approximately 500 pages. The copy I have contains commentaries and translations that raise this number to over a 1 000 pages. Yes- It is a lot to read. One of the main protagonists in this book's story is a man called Arjuna. Now- if you are like me who does not know anything about Hinduism whatsoever you might never have heard of him, but since he is a close friend of Lord Krishna I am certain that the followers of the Hindu faith know very well who he is. While my legs are still tired from this morning's training I want to talk about a part of the martial arts spectrum that I like a lot, yet not see being publicized in the West as much as MMA and other martial arts based sports. Every now and then I get to speak with non-martial artist members of the public and get their idea of what they expect of martial arts and why they do or do not want to take up martial arts. What I have heard quite often now is "I want to learn Krav Maga!" and every now and then "our competitions are full-contact". I also happen to hear "I used to do this or that style..." I guess that in spite of martial arts being around for this long people still regard it as a way of fighting and nothing more. Before these movies came out I have received what one could call an extensive martial arts education in the physical, psychological and philosophical aspects of the martial arts of Japan, Korea and China. ht...

I have been enjoying Dragonball Super for quite a while now. One character who is experiencing tremendous changes for the better at the moment is Vegeta. This proud Saiyan Prince has been plagued by being surpassed by Goku for years now. Now- we see a new Vegeta that is not only stronger than Goku (for the time being-lol), but who has changed a lot with the help of their new teacher Whis. The first huge change is that Vegeta got humble. This humility started with him begging Whis to take him as a student. Whis takes the whole humility thing even further by having him do household chores.  This may seem weird and comical, but pride is actually a huge obstacle in one's progress in the martial arts. One of the martial art's master's greatest assets is the ability to do what is needed without hesitation. This requires firstly that one can clearly perceive what needs to be done and then the ability to act on that knowledge. What gets in the way ...

I don't know who else likes Dragonball Z, but I am glad to see that we did not only get a new series, but also an all-new movie. This movie is set in the Z-era and actually seems to retcon GT out of the canon.  Having learnt to transform into a Super Saiyan God he took it further and went on to Super Saiyan God 2- making GT's Super Saiyan 4 form unnecessary... That is not what I want to tell you about, though. Goku's newest teacher is actually what I want to tell yu about. Now- we know that Goku first learnt martial arts from Grandpa Gohan. In later years he would end up studying under Master Roshi- The Turtle Hermit (where he learnt the kamehameha in seconds) and after that was King Kai! It seemed that Roshi's approach to training Goku was by strengthening his body by making him perform everyday tasks and training while wearing weighted clothes.
