Cleaning out my closet

Okay- This week I have not been in a good mood and it is getting worse. While my tolerance for bullshit is really low I'd like to place the following on record. Earlier this year I was asked to make time in my already busy schedule to attend classes at our Shotokan dojo- under a sensei whom I have left late in 1997. Because I was happy with the idea of spending time with other martial arts enthusiasts and making sure that our style does not die within us I agreed to put aside some time to go to the dojo and train with my fellow students- who at this stage are all my seniors. Before this time I have already been training on my own at no cost and needed nobody to watch me or to tell me to get up and train regularly. About 22 sessions of training on my own at the hall painstakingly acquired for us, three payments of R 200 and 1 surprise notice of an up and coming grading of about R 1 500.00 later I am starting to feel like I have been played for a fool. Honestly now- I ...

Finally done!

Thank you for waiting. The first book in my series on Wenhsiuquan Techniques is ready! It was a lot of fun getting it together and I really appreciate my friends helping me with the photos. Soon I will give you the info on how to get hold of your copy.  Off to the printers I go!

I'll be gone for a while

Hello to all who read this blog. I am currently working on an e-book which is to be the first of many that I will market here. This means that I will not be posting here for a while. The posts on this blog were never meant to explain my techniques in detail. I have decided to make the full details available- at a price. Stay well.

Wenhsiu Taijiquan

Taijiquan is one of the big contributors to Wenhsiuquan's technique. The power forms in Wenhsiuquan are based on the forms of Taijiquan and Shaolin Boxing. My first introduction to Taijiquan's internal strength came from two Taiwanese girls, Wei Jie Ju and Chen Yu Chi. It had left a lasting impression on me. I feel that every martial art should train its students to develop internal strength and to channel qi. I don't think it is necessary to explain why.

Some katas for the beginner.

The first kata introducing strikes and grabs. This is the first kata to show throws and takedowns. Second kata for strikes and grabs.  Second kata for throws. I find that pre-arranged katas are actually more useful as a teaching tool than actual training. When you have the basics down you are better off developing your own kata to prepare you for as many situations as possible.

Cleaning out the soul

The Ten Commandments tell us that there is one day of the week to cease work and to dedicate to God. The Bible tells us in Genesis that even God rested on the 7th day. This wisdom is of much use to us today as it was in the days of Moses. Negative energy (here meaning stress, anger and bad feelings) gather as we work and interact with the world. One who does not take the time out to get rid of these will even find himself becoming physically ill. In martial arts training this is also true. I actually saw in an episode of Street Fighter- Assassin's Fist (Episode 3 on Youtube if you haven't seen the series yet) that Gotetsu told his students to "cleanse their spirit" with meditation after training. Beside physical exertion- your training will also put stress on your mind and anger and frustration can easily set in. This is harmful. Meditation serves to restore balance and to rid ourselves of the mental clutter from training. Shaolin students will further tell you t...

Who is prepared to die?

The fights really worth fighting are usually against powerful adversaries that normal people are wary to face. Facing enemies like this often means death to those who actually do. It is what evil people like this count on. They count on the fact that those they oppress are afraid to lose what is valuable to them and that they are afraid to die. Wherever in the world we find people like this they will stay in power until somebody actually makes the sacrifice. If you consider yourself a warrior and think your martial arts were made just to look cool or to just defend yourself- you miss a great deal of what being a warrior is about.
